DIVE UNDER THE COVERS WITH HANX

When we discovered vegan condom brand HANX, we just knew we had to share them with you. Founders Farah Kabin and Sarah Welsh have created a range of sexual health products that are designed to sit unashamedly in your bags and on your bedside tables – and just how beautiful are they?

Tell us about your brand and how you came about?

F: "HANX was launched in 2017 as a result of an awkward bump in I had when I was buying condoms - my boss. Of course the packaging was bright red and garish.

At the time my co-founder Sarah was working in a sexual health clinic as a gynaecology doctor, she often saw women coming into the clinic with problems as a result of the condoms they were using so we had a lightbulb moment and thought, 'wait a minute why don’t we design condoms with women in mind?' I, myself, was also coming off hormonal contraception because of side effects like weight gain and mood swings and really the main thing that you can use if you aren’t using hormonal contraceptives is a condom."

What’s your biggest challenge as a brand?

F: "I think getting through to people that we are a legitimate brand. The category hasn’t changed in decades, all people know or are aware of are the main players in the market. It’s been hard getting through to people that yes we are a medical device, yes we are just as effective as any other condom out there, and just as safe but we can also be vegan and free of nasty chemicals but that doesn’t mean the efficacy of the products is any less. Equally it’s been quite exciting because we’re addressing a brand new market of women who haven’t been directly spoken to in this area for decades."

Tell us your favourite quote, mantra or best piece of advice

F: "From my mum, she always said, 'trust your gut it’s got your best instinct at heart' and the older I’ve gotten the more important that has been and also how true it really is."

What’s the most stressful part of your day?

F: "Any day that involves spreadsheets really stresses me out, I come from finance (so ex-investment banking) but I still cannot stand a spreadsheet. There’s nothing worse than a spreadsheet!"

Tell us your proudest moment as a business

R: "Seeing our products on shelves, we’re stocked in over 550 stores! That was a really nice moment to know we’ve gone from an idea to then seeing it on the shelves that haven’t been disrupted in years. It's been especially special when I go into a local shop, my family are from up north so when I go home and go to a store and see our products that’s a real moment."

What product do you wish you’d invented?

F: "Well, I'm not sure this even exist yet but I wish there was an app that told me where clean toilets were, like fresh clean toilets! I’d love to just stand somewhere in London and it just tells me "Ok you’re 0.5 miles away from here and there’s a 4 star rated toilet there."

What is your favourite discovery from THE FIND?

F: "I really like the Mrs White’s range. Unstung Hero specifically, I like that it comes in aluminium bottle."

What three things could you not live without?

R: "Peanut butter, my contact lenses and my Eve Lom face cream."

Where are you going on holiday this year?

F: "There are a few places I would love to go on my holidays this year. Cuba is one of them then San Francisco and the wine region around there so Noma and Napa Valley. I’ve got a few friends who work out there and we’re going to do a girls trip driving around the wine region. On the way back I’m going to New Orleans and then a stop in New York to see some family and then home!"

Which three items do you never travel without?

F: "My Shiseido sun cream for my face, I wear that everyday in fact whether I am on holiday or not. I have always my Jo Malone scent with me, a small version, I think the scent is English Pear and… my charger! I can’t live without my charger for my phone."
