Skin Care: 5 Steps to Healthy Summer Skin

Skin Care: 5 Steps to Healthy Summer Skin

Summer is in full swing at the minute and you’re probably out enjoying the heat and sunshine while it lasts! But did you know that hot weather, humidity, and excess sun exposure can result in clogged pores, breakouts, sunburn, hyperpigmentation and dark spots? Don’t worry - we’ve put together a list of 5 simple steps to prevent summer skin concerns and help you get clear, healthy and glowy summer skin!

1. Level Up Your SPF

You’ve probably already heard of how important it is to include sunscreen as part of your everyday skincare routine. But it's especially important to remember your SPF during the summer when the days are longer and you’re more likely to spend more time in the sun. Good UV protection is by far the most important step in your skincare routine to achieving healthy summer skin. Apply sunscreen every day to areas of your skin which will be exposed to the sun, such as your face, neck, chest, ears, hands and don’t forget your lips too!

2. Lighten Up But Don’t Ditch Your Moisturiser

The air is not as dry in the summer as it is in the winter, but that doesn’t mean you should ditch your moisturiser! If you feel like your moisturiser is making you too greasy or weighing your face down when it's too hot, try switching from a rich moisturiser to a lighter one. Ideally, try to go for a moisturiser with SPF to get that extra UV protection!

3. Make Sure Your Products Are Non-Comedogenic

You’re more likely to get hot and sweaty in the summer, especially during a 35 degree heat wave like this one! Did you know that hot weather, humidity, sweat and oil build-up in the skin can cause clogged pores which can lead to breakouts? An easy way to prevent breakouts in the summer is to avoid heavy moisturisers and oily ingredients. Instead try to go for non-comedogenic products - these are products containing ingredients which won’t clog or block the pores in your skin, meaning less breakouts during the summer!

Take a look at this Organic, Oil-Free SPF30 Sunscreen from Coola, which is a fragrance and oil free, non-comedogenic product which means it’s not likely to cause any breakouts! Those with acne-prone and oily skin can opt for skincare products which include salicylic acid into their routines which is great for tackling breakouts!

4. Get That Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a great ingredient which should be part of your skincare routine all year round, but it's especially important during the summer months. Vitamin C not only helps prevent hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure, but also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and can help with collagen production too! Amazing right?

Take a look at Facile’s Destress Calming Serum with Vitamin C which can help rejuvenate and hydrate your skin, as well as reduce redness and inflammation. 5. Don’t Forget To Exfoliate

While it’s important to not over exfoliate as a general rule, during the summer it’s good to incorporate more exfoliation into your skincare routine, especially if you’ve got oily or acne-prone skin, as it can help unclog pores and reduce blemishes. It’s best not to exfoliate if you’re sunburnt, you should let your skin heal first. Ideally, exfoliating once or twice a week is best for achieving healthy skin.
