How To Feel More Zen with Adaptogenic Coffee interview
We caught up with Zain, the co-founder of London Nootropics. he told us more about their adaptogenic coffee and his top tips for staying relaxed and focused.
Hi, Zain. Tell us your story – how did London Nootropics come about?
Shez & I were having coffee with added natural ingredients for a natural energy boost before the gym, as an alternative to chemical-laced pre-workout drinks. A few friends who tried our blends loved them! And they suggested we should make our pre-workout coffee blend commercially.
We were experimenting with herbal extracts, working out which helped give us sustained energy and focus, and in the course of that experimentation came across medicinal mushrooms and other adaptogens. Very quickly, we realised how incredible adaptogens are and how they work on different systems in our body to balance stressors, increase mental clarity, cognitive performance and improve physical endurance.
Eventually, it hit us that the profound range of effects that we were able to blend meant this deserved to be much more than a pre-workout product. We were surprised that there actually weren’t many high-quality products out there offering adaptogens in a convenient and delicious format. So we took the plunge and decided to launch 3 lifestyle blends to help people “flow” across their day.
Can you tell us a bit about your adaptogenic coffee?
Our adaptogenic coffee blends are designed to help you flow through your day; they give you all the benefits of regular coffee whilst minimising side effects such as jitters, anxiety and a crash. They're made with the highest-quality medicinal mushrooms and other adaptogens and each blend is designed for a specific purpose.
What types of coffee do you offer and what are their benefits?
Grind for mental clarity and focus, Zen to alleviate stress & anxiety and Mojo for a natural boost! Mojo contains Cordyceps mushroom which is known to increase aerobic capacity and oxygen flow around your body and also to boost ATP - our energy molecule. You can read more about each of our blends and the adaptogens they contain on our website.
Why adaptogens and coffee?
Adaptogens help balance physical and mental stressors in our mind & body. Caffeine can help increase our alertness and attention (by blocking our adenosine receptors, which make us drowsy) - it can also increase our cortisol levels (our stress hormone) which can result in jitters/anxiety. Adaptogens can help balance our cortisol levels, ensuring we get the benefits from coffee whilst minimising any side effects. Caffeine is also absorbed quickly, which may result in a crash and adaptogens can help give us sustained energy levels without a crash - plus they have additional health benefits too!
Our vision is to make the highest-quality adaptogens easily accessible, convenient & delicious, helping more people benefit from their balancing properties and find their flow.
Tell us a bit about the CBD and Ashwagandha found in your Zen Coffee.
Zen is our most balancing blend, it’s great to help you feel calm & alert and popular with those sensitive to caffeine. CBD works on our endocannabinoid system, whilst Ashwagandha works on our adrenals and can help us balance our cortisol.
Do you have any other top tips on how to stay calm and focused?
Adaptogens are incredible at helping us balance stressors in our body and mind. Having a holistic approach to looking after ourselves can help us stay balanced and allow us to focus on our day. Plenty of water, good quality sleep, good nutrition and some form of meditation whether it be yoga, guided meditation, walking in nature or reading a book can help rest and restore our mind and body, allowing them to function at their best.
