In Focus: Aromatherapy Associates

Firstly, what is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy works on three main levels: smell, absorption and absorption via skin, often through the use of oils, serums and creams.

The sense of smell is the most primitive of all our senses and it is linked to some of the oldest and deepest parts of the brain, often transporting us to a cherish time and place where we feel happiness seep in, down to our bones.

Absorption through inhalation of essential oils that travel internally are especially effective for maintaining a healthy respiratory system.

Finally, absorption through the skin, now we all know how amazing that feels (even better if you can get someone else to apply it). Penetrating into the deeper layers of the skin, essential oils can have a positive effect on the skin, such as optimizing the cellular renewal process, enhancing blood circulation and addressing problems such as acne, eczema and aging skin.

Aromatherapy has been used throughout history, with examples of uses that date back to Mesopotamia. They were used to treat a whole spectrum of aches, pains and illnesses. Arriving in the 21st century and aromatherapy is still beloved as a course of treatment and care for oneself.

Geraldine Howard and Sue Beechey, founders of Aromatherapy Associates, continue to share the powers of aromatherapy with as many people as possible. With knowledge taken from their tutelage under Micheline Arcier. A pioneer in aromatherapy, Arcier was a founding member of the International Federation of Aromatherapists. She opened her own clinic in Knightsbridge, London in the 1960’s where Geraldine Howard and Sue Beechey were trained!
